"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Dr. Seuss. Working as a reading teacher at the 8th-grade level, I know that if my students leave my class without being able to read and reason competently, their chances for completing high school and competing in today's marketplace are slim. I must find ways to motivate and teach my students, and I'm eager for the help I expect to find as I engage in this program.

BILL GOODMAN

During my years in the urban schools I have noticed that one of the biggest problems is the teacher turn-over rate. I think it is essential that we be able to control this problem and become more consistent in the classroom. I feel through the Urban Specialist program and Project Grad we are beginning to make progress.

I find that understanding differences in each learner helps me as a teacher. I can focus on each child's strength and use that as our starting point towards effective learning. I look forward to finding out more about building this relationship to enhance learning during the Urban Specialist program.

I truly believe that teaching is a calling that only a select few are suited for. An effective teacher must first be compassionate and then passionate. If you are both of these things, and continue to honor your craft, you will have the privilege of touching thousands of lives. This is a calling that I am proud to be responding to. Long live the teachers of the world and God bless them for being in the classrooms!

The following quote by Mahatma Gandhi expresses my thoughts of the importance and impact of growth and change: "As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world- that is the myth of the atomic age- as in being able to remake ouselves."

I believe that every child should have the opportunity to succeed. As a teacher my job is to provide the opportunities that allow for success both inside the classroom and outside the classroom. In meeting this challenge, the diverse needs of students must not only be recognized but also embraced.
