URBAN SPECIALISTS -- 2001-2003

This cohort of 2001-02 Urban Specialists was selected by a panel of UT and Knox County School faculty. Each of these candidates has demonstrated a commitment to urban schools, students, and communities as well as expertise as an effective urban educator.

When asked what they feel most passionate about related to urban schools, they responded...

Becky Ashe, Urban SpecialistBECKY ASHE

I believe every teacher is really an "urban" teacher because  urban schools, at least in our area, tend to have more diversity. Mainly what we are focusing on is learning how to teach to and embrace the diversity of students in our classes rather than the traditional model of "one-size-fits-all" curriculum. I think it is a positive step and look forward  to a time when this mindset is common to all schools.

"The KIDS! It is about the kids! It’s about respecting them and loving them and teaching them. It’s about understanding them and letting them understand me so that we can learn from and about each other. I want them to want to learn and to know that education is power and that it is the key to anything they want to do."

"Frequently one hears that children from urban areas do not care or cannot learn. This perception is false. All children can learn if given the opportunity to succeed. A teacher’s knowledge of urban culture, the students’ families and communities, and how to link this with their planning and teaching can enable each student to succeed."

"I’m concerned about the needs of students who face crisis situations at home on a regular basis seeing someone get shot, drugs, etc. How do we constantly acknowledge what they deal with and yet teach them so they can rise above these negative aspects of their environment?"

"I value the diversity of the urban classroom. It’s why I choose to live in an urban community. I believe in strength through diversity, yet in the urban environment I continually encounter intolerant attitudes from adults and children. I want to engender attitudes of tolerance in my classroom and foster a learning environment that feels safe and comfortable."

"Being an educator in an urban setting is like being given a precious gift - the gift of unsurpassed love from the children in our classroom. Children in urban areas are longing for stability in their lives, and we, as teachers, can bring that stability into their lives. Through our love, compassion, and dedication we can make a difference in the lives of the wonderful children in our classrooms."

"I want to find ways to keep teachers in urban schools so that a ‘unity’ among faculty can be built. A school can become more successful when a faculty works together for many years, not changing every two years. Kids in the middle cannot adapt to change very well and shouldn’t have to just because teachers leave the school."

"Urban schools are a microcosm of the surrounding city and county in which they sit. All of the issues facing students across our cities are reflected in urban schools, and some students in urban schools exhibit the strengths of students of affluent schools. Until we begin to talk about the lasting effects of poverty and class on our students and take some action that goes beyond what happens in schools, urban schools will not improve significantly. Teachers alone cannot solve the problems we face."
