2004-2005 Urban Specialist Calendar

The URBAN SPECIALIST program incorporates twelve hours of university credit completed over a two-year period. Participants are involved in two Summer Institutes as well as seminars and class meetings throughout each of the two years with a total of 100 contact hours per year, a technology strand that continues across all courses, and independent projects aligned with National Board Certification standards. The courses selected for the program can be used in partial fulfillment of a higher degree requirement.

During the Summer Institutes, participants learn from leaders in the field of urban education as well as a cross-section of UT and KCS faculty. UT and KCS faculty are invited to participate in the design and implementation of the coursework and are compensated by URBAN IMPACT for their efforts.

Participants who are selected for this program engage in course work focused on research-based curriculum and instruction approaches to improve teaching and learning in urban schools, action research, special-education interventions that can be used to accommodate the needs of diverse student populations and learning about the socio-cultural context of urban schooling. Educators who complete the Urban Specialist Certificate will be recruited through Knox County's Teacher Center to lead professional-development seminars for beginning teachers and teachers new to urban schools. Urban Impact will financially support these exemplary urban educators for assuming leadership roles in inducting beginning teachers and those new to urban contexts.
