  • Urban placements in a co-teaching model for all secondary science interns.

    • This year’s secondary science interns have all been placed in urban schools (West HS, Fulton HS, and Austin-East HS, South-Doyle MS) in co-teaching clusters. Dr. Claudia Melear is coordinating the effort to introduce this model and study its impact.

  • Involving interns in human service agencies. Dr. Bob Kronick has helped several faculty members incorporate linkages with community agencies to help develop an awareness of the nonacademic needs of children and families. He has incorporated full service school theory and practice as well as opportunities for our preservice teachers to learn about human service agencies through first hand experiences. During the 2000-2001 academic year, pre-interns spent four weeks working in a variety of human service agencies. For the 2001-2002 academic year, this component of the field experience program is being expanded.

  • Prison Visit. Dr. Bob Kronick and Dr. Cheryl Kershaw took two cohorts of elementary and secondary interns to Brushy Mountain Prison to hear the “voices” of inmates about their school experiences. The purpose of this visit was to “put a face to the statistics that say we’re basing prison building projection figures on second grade failure rates and third grade test scores. Inmates described poignantly how they felt when they could not keep up academically or lacked a sense of belonging. Included in this section is an article being published by UNITE (Urban Network to Improve Teacher Education) on this visit. Plans are underway to expand the accessibility of this component of the coursework.

  • The IECE faculty have worked closely with Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Technology Academy to refine the urban teacher preparation program for elementary teachers.
