The Southern Appalachian Naturalist Certification Program (SANCP) is a goal-oriented naturalist training program consisting of enriching core courses that give an overview or “basic training” in Southern Appalachian ecology and interpretive techniques.

The purpose of this certification program is to engage people in natural history study in the Southern Appalachian Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in order to further their appreciation and stewardship of the mountain ecosystems and to given them the skills to share their knowledge with others.

A series of courses (both field and classroom-based) includes ecological communities, flora and fauna, the history of nature study, interpretive training, the role of the naturalist, research methodologies, and other skills necessary to an educational naturalist.

Formal and non-formal educators, park volunteers, and anyone interested in gaining knowledge about the unique ecology of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and skills in communication and interpretation are invited to attend.

You do not need formal training in biological sciences or natural history to succeed in the program.

Through participation in the SANCP, you will develop relationships with other members of the naturalist community, creating an important social and peer network.

After receiving specialized training, a Southern Appalachian Naturalist will have:

• a broad understanding of the ecology and natural history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains;

• the ability to best communicate their knowledge about this area; and

• the ability to serve their community by educating others about their local environment.

To become a Certified Southern Appalachian Naturalist, a trainee must complete eight core courses in the SANCP with a minimum of 90 hours combined field and classroom instruction. There is no deadline for completion of the SANCP.

Costs: Each weekend course is $260/person (includes instruction, meals, and lodging) or $235/person without lodging (meals are required). July courses are $260/person for each course ($235 without lodging) or $450 for two consecutive courses (the non-lodging discount is not available for the week-long option).

SANCP is a non-credit certification program offered by the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont in partnership with The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
