Grant Writing Certificate
Successful grant writing is critical to the survival of non-profit organizations.
The University of Tennessee's non-credit Grant Writing Certificate program provides an intensive opportunity to acquire the knowledge and practice the skills necessary to succeed in today's competitive grant writing environment.
Students pursuing the certificate must complete:
• Basic, intermediate, and advanced grant writing courses in either the Foundation or Government track;
• Four core courses: Grant Writing Ethics, Grant Funding Research, Program Evaluation, and Grant Budgets; and
• Two electives.
Winter 2010 courses:
(Core course) Program Evaluation
This course covers the design and implementation of a results-oriented program evaluation system that produces valid, credible, and useful information.

This course teaches grant writers to develop strong budgets that support their grant requests. You'll learn about matching requirements and both hard and soft costs associated with implementing and operating your projects.

New! (Elective) Lobbying and the Non-Profit Organization
There are several forms of non-profit organizations. Some are allowed to lobby for their cherished causes; some are not. This short course provides an overview of the approaches used by successful non-profit organizations as they promote their causes and find ways to comply with the lobbying restrictions in the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, yet make their case to policy makers.

Basic Grant Writing for Government
Upon completion of this course you'll understand the unique aspects of government grant applications. You'll also learn how government funds are announced, allocated, and dispersed. The course assists you in determining eligibility, demonstrating organizational capacity, and utilizing data to develop a strong needs justification.

Basic Grant Writing for Foundations
This course helps students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to identify sources of funding. Fit your project to the funding organization, estimate a project budget, learn how to research appropriate foundations and corporations that fund your type of project, establish contact with the funding agency, and prepare and refine your request for submission.

Intermediate Grant Writing for Government
This course addresses the core components of government grants including constructing effective responses to questions regarding organizational capacity, demonstration of need, method and plan to accomplish the goals and objectives, the plan for evaluating success of the grant project, logic models, budgets, required assurances, and other attachments. Advanced Grant Writing for Government
This course provides experienced grant writers an opportunity to design a program, build a budget, and package and submit a government grant application. Components include developing a concise demonstration of their organizational capacity, an effective needs statement, logical goals and objectives, achievable timelines, realistic evaluation components, program budgets, and various required attachments and assurances. Prerequisite: Intermediate Grant Writing for Government.
