Rockets! (Grades 4-7, rising)
You’ll study rocket flight, principles of flight, history and rocket design. Then you’ll build a flying model rocket complete with a motor–just like the space shuttle. Make a rocket you can fly indoors. Instructor: Paul Lewis is an astronomer extraordinaire and is with the UT Department of Physics.
Course # 12SU837 Fee: $99
Wed.-Fri., 6/13/2012-6/15/2012, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, 3 classes
UT Physics Bldg., Room 507

Universe Exploration (Grades 4-6, rising)
Look through the Hubble Space Telescope, go to Mars and get some close-up looks at the evidence for water along with the MER rovers and catch Cassini on its way to Saturn. After exploring you’ll build our own solar system, make craters and comets, learn all about telescopes and much more! Instructor: Paul Lewis.
Course # 12SU832 Fee: $99

UT Physics Bldg., Room 507

Exploring Microbiology Through Food (Grades 6-8, rising)
Explore food-borne illnesses by conducting hands-on experiments to learn more about the bacteria that cause them. Conduct several labs to culture bacteria, stain them, view them under the microscope and identify specific species. Learn about cell structures and functions, create edible cell models and build scale structures. Instructor: Jennifer Richards.

UT Food Safety and Processing Bldg., Ag Campus, Student Laboratory, Room 20

Bones, Crimes, Careers: Forensic Anthropology (Grades 9-12, rising)
Learn how scientists and investigators determine non-human from human remains, what bones can tell us archaeologically and how this information is used to solve crimes. Demonstrations include learning how to determine the age, sex and stature of remains, in addition to other forensic techniques. Learn about job opportunities in the various fields of anthropology, such as bio-archaeology. Instructor: Callie Roller.

Fun With Fungi (Grades 4-7, rising)
This hands-on course features often overlooked creatures that perform valuable ecological services to keep the world looking the way it does. Take field trips to local parks to collect fungi and bring them back to the classroom. Compare different types of fungi by making detailed drawings and use microscopes to examine tissue organization and spore structure and also use sterile techniques to culture the specimens. Instructors: Emily Austin and Jessica Bryant.

Fun With Forensics: Adventures in Chemistry
(Grades 6-8, rising)
Become an investigator by exploring scientific and chemical principles and techniques used to detect criminal acts. Examine physical, synthetic blood, trace evidence, organize and record data, think critically, conduct simple tests and combine your data to solve a crime. Parents are invited to attend the lab wrap-up during the final 30 minutes of each class session. Instructor: Al Hazari is a director of UT Chemistry Labs.

Fun With DNA (Grades 9-12, rising)
The week is filled with hands-on experiences with different molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, transformation, gel electrophoresis and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) from plants like switch grass. Other projects you’ll work on include cloning a gene from a biofuel crop and transforming bacteria with plant DNA. Instructor: Sujata Agarwal has a masters in molecular biology. She is the hub lab manager for the UT Plant Science Department which facilitates genomics, proteomics and bio-informatics research.
