Photojournalism for Kids
(Grades 9-12, rising)

Learn how to tell compelling stories with your camera. This course explores the history of photojournalism, how to capture the decisive moments using your camera, properly caption your photos and edit them for publication. Have fun with field assignments given during the course and show your final work to your fellow students. This course requires you to have knowledge of digital cameras. Point and shoot cameras are allowed. Film cameras may not be used for this course. Also, you’ll discover possible career paths in photojournalism. Instructor: Randy Sartin.

Fashion? Celebrity? Fine art? What sort of photographer do you aspire to be? This course covers the fundamentals of photography basics and how to take better photos through framing. Learn photography techniques to take better portraits, still lifes or landscape and nature photos. You’ll be required to bring your own camera (and manual) to every class session and to shoot one roll of film, have it processed and bring the photo prints to the next class session. The equivalent with a digital camera is also acceptable. Say cheese! In addition to basic photography fundamentals, grades 8-12 study the principles and applications of shutter speed, aperture and ASA. You’ll learn how to use focal lengths and lighting to get desired results. Instructor: Stacy Jacobs.
