Grass Valley Switcher

  • LOWER LEFT (Source Selection Controls)

PRESET BACKGROUND (also called PRVW BUS) - The selected button determines what background source will be put on Program when the BKGD button is lit, and either the CUT or AUTO TRANS button is subsequently pushed.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND (also called PGRM BUS) - The selected Button indicates what source is on Program. The buttons or background sources on this bus are not directly selected by pushing them. You select the background you want on this bus from the Preset Background bus directly below it, using the CUT or AUTO TRANS button.

KEY BUS - The selected button determines what source is placed in Key.

    LOWER CENTER (Transition Controls)

BKGD - When this Background button is pushed or already lit, the Background source selected on the PRESET BACKGROUND will appear on the PRVW Monitor and can be put on Program using the CUT or AUTO TRANS buttons. Pushing the BKGD button turns off the KEY button.

KEY - When this Key button is pushed or already lit, the source selected on the KEY BUS will be Keyed in the current Program Background on the PRVW Monitor.  The position, shape, size and border of the key are adjusted with other controls as is the framing of the source that will be Keyed in while the Key is displayed on the PRVW Monitor. The key can then be put on Program using either the CUT or AUTO TRANS button. Pushing the KEY button turns off the BKGD button

BKGD & KEY - The Background and Key button can be depressed simultaneously, and both will remain lit. The Background selected on the PRESET BACKGROUND and the source selected on the KEY BUS will appear on the PRVW Monitor. They can then be put on Program with the CUT or AUTO TRANS buttons.

AUTO TRANS - The Automatic Transition button should only be used at the beginning of a class and occasionally during non-interactive classes. The MIX and WIPE buttons directly above the AUTO TRANS button along with the KEY PATTERN and the AUTO TRANSITION RATE buttons at the top of the Switcher determine what type of transition will occur on Program when the AUTO TRANS button is pushed. We use the AUTO TRANS button with the MIX button and a transition rate
of 10 - 15 Frames to fade up the Instructor from Black at the start of class..

CUT - The Cut button is the primary device for putting new sources on Program. To "Take" a source means to put it on Program using this Cut button. Taking a new Background to Program with the Cut button is relatively simple. Keying in a second source on the current Program Background is more complicated. After a source is Keyed in, a "KEY ON" message will light up under the KEY button. This puts the switcher in a different mode. If the BKGD button is now pushed, it will turn off the KEY button. Depressing the CUT button will then put a new background on Program, but the Key will also remain on Program. Once the "KEY ON" message appears, the KEY button must also be lit in order for a Key to be removed from Program.

MIDDLE AND LOWER RIGHT (CG Controls)

DSK PVW - Pushing the Downstream Key Preview button allows you to preview what the Character Generator would insert on Program. It puts the current Program on the Preview Monitor and inserts the selected page in the Character Generator over it.

DSK CUT - The Downstream Key Cut button inserts or removes the current Character Generator page on Program.

DSK MIX - The Downstream Key Mix button fades in or fades out the current Character Generator page on Program. The speed on the fade is determined by the buttons at the top right on the Switcher.

MIDDLE AND UPPER LEFT (Key Adjustment Controls)

PATTERN / E-MEM - There are 10 Pattern Choice Buttons. We use # 8, the Square

MASK / PRESET SIZE - This dial determines the size of the Key Pattern.

POSITIONER & JOY STICK - When the POSITIONER Button is off, the Key Pattern will be located in the center of the screen. When the POSITIONER Button is on, it's red light lit, the Joy Stick to the left of it determines the location of the Key Pattern.

ASPECT ON & ASPECT dial - When the ASPECT ON Button is on, it enables you to increase the width or height of a Pattern. You can make the Square into a wide or tall Rectangle with the ASPECT dial.

BORDER - The BORDER Dial determines the width of the Border surrounding the Key. The color of the border is controlled by first selecting BORDER/EFF under the MATTE/BKGD options located at the upper center of the switcher. The HUE, LUM, and CHROMA dials under MATTE/BKGD located in the middle center can then change the border color.

Turning the LUM Dial clockwise increases the Whiteness. Turning the CHROMA Dial clockwise increases the Saturation of the Color. Turning the HUE Dial selects the Color. When the LUM Dial is turned clockwise all the way and the CHROMA Dial is turned counter-clockwise all the way, any Color selected with the HUE Dial will become White.

    UPPER LEFT (Memory Controls)

E-MEM - When the (square) E-MEM button is on, its white light lit, the function of the 10 PATTERN / E-MEM buttons changes. Pushing one of these buttons when the E-MEM button is lit can potentially change every control on the switcher. The switcher will return every control to the setting it had when it was memorized earlier by the E-MEM.

To memorize the settings on the switcher, push the REVERSE / LEARN button with the E-MEM button on. Pushing a PATTERN / E-MEM button will now cause that button to "learn" the current settings for all the switcher controls. When the E-MEM button is not lit, the REVERSE / LEARN button reverses the key pattern.

Pushing the (square) E-MEM button turns it off. The white light will go off, and the PATTERN / E-MEM buttons will return to Pattern mode. Note that pushing the E-MEM button on or off never causes any direct changes. It is only when the PATTERN / E-MEM BUTTONS are subsequently pushed after the E-MEM button is lit and the REVERSE / LEARN is off that radical changes can occur.
