Teleclass Teacher's Guide

INTRODUCTION

Our society requires a highly educated population. Employers increasingly demand workers who have post-secondary education, on-the-job training, and specialized continuing education, yet many must be at work during the day. At the same time, new technology -- including interactive television, computers, the Internet and World Wide Web, fax, fiber optic networks and satellites -- make it possible for educational institutions to deliver instruction to groups and individuals at almost any location. This is the essence of Distance Education: the use of electronic and print media to bridge the gap between teacher and student.

PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE

This guide is designed to help you be a highly effective teacher in the Distance Education format. The suggestions related to courses that are offered by live, interactive video using digitally compressed video technology (CODEC) and videotapes. All of the suggestions build upon your knowledge and experience as a classroom teacher.

This guide, however, is not a substitute for training and experience in the Distance Education classroom. We hope you will participate in faculty development workshops, discuss distance education with your colleagues, and come to the teleclassroom to try out new ideas.

UTK'S TELECLASS PROGRAM

Distance Education at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is a cooperative venture between academic departments and the UTK University Outreach and Continuing Education.  Some credit courses are videotaped during the semester for small groups and individuals. (These tapes are recycled at the end of the semester.)
